Barren Island, India's only active volcano in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, captivates adventurers with its dramatic eruptions and pristine surroundings. Located about 100 km from Havelock Island, this uninhabited 3 sq km landmass features a stratovolcano rising 354 meters, with recent activity including eruptions in 2025.
Volcanic History and Wonders
Barren Island's first recorded eruption occurred in 1787, forming a cinder cone, followed by activity in 1789, 1795, 1803-04, and 1852. After dormancy, it reactivated in 1991, with major events in 1994-95, 2005-07, 2017, 2022, and September 2025, producing lava flows, ash plumes, and Strombolian explosions.
As of early 2026, thermal anomalies persist on the summit or upper flank, confirming ongoing magmatic processes. Visitors witness smoke, ash clouds, and glowing vents from safe distances, making it Southeast Asia's sole active volcano.
